WHAT IF ALL OF MALIBU READ THE SAME BOOK?
On January 26, 2009 the Malibu City Council proclaimed April 20, 2009 through May 20, 2009 “One Book, One City-Malibu” month.
This year, One Book, One City Malibu will celebrate its seventh annual community read with “Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission To Promote Peace... One School At A Time” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Rellin. Greg Mortenson is a Nobel Peace Prize candidate and founder of ‘Pennies for Peace’ which has built over 60 schools for girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This year's community reading program has expanded to include local students who have actively participated in the ‘Pennies for Peace’ program, as well as Pepperdine University and Diesel, A Bookstore.
On May 1st, 2009, One Book, One City-Malibu and Pepperdine University will host Nobel Peace Prize candidate Greg Mortenson who will share his true-life experiences that came to shape “Three Cups of Tea” and which eventually led to ‘Pennies for Peace’ and the Central Asia Institute which has contributed to the progress of education in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Later in the month a panel of Pepperdine faculty will discuss issues raised by Mortenson and Relin and will invite questions from the audience. Malibu will launch its month-long celebration at the Malibu Library with Malibu City officials, Malibu Librarian Stuart Goldman and Pepperdine Dean of Library Services Mark Russo, as well as local students. Diesel Bookstore will sponsor the One Book, One City-Malibu Essay Contest for Malibuites of all ages. See CALENDAR and EVENTS for details.
Featured Book for 2009
ONE BOOK, ONE CITY - MALIBU WRITING CONTEST
The book selected by One Book, One City -- Malibu for 2009 is “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson, along with the Young Reader's Version and the Picture Book, “Listen to the Wind”. These books will be read by Malibu's citizens throughout “One Book, One City – Malibu Month.” There are many events planned that are associated with this community project.
As in years past, there will be a Writing Contest connected to this year's book. Since the book focuses on the author's efforts to bring education to the young women and children of Afghanistan and Pakistan, this year's contest will focus on each participant's experiences or impressions of the book, of this part of the world, or whatever creative impulse is prompted by Greg Mortenson's story. There will be awards for the best fiction/poetry and the best non-fiction entries in both young and adult categories.
The contest is open to people of all ages. Winners will receive gift certificates from Diesel, A Bookstore, in Malibu. Prizes will be announced at the end of the One Book festivities at the Grand Finale on May 23, 2009. Entries should be submitted to Diesel, A Bookstore by May 18, 2009.
Please join us in celebrating Malibu's One Book, One City - Malibu talent and Malibu's community.
